For the Lord Jesus, loving God and
loving neighbor cannot be separated. The law and the prophets depend
upon these two commandments. You shall love Lord your God with all
your heart, mind and soul, and strength. And you shall love your
neighbor as yourself.
A story was told that Mother Teresa,
once was approached by a priest, who was looking for inspiration and
spiritual direction. She asked him about his prayer life. After
telling her all the things that he was doing, she said, it wasn't
enough. Because prayer is not just giving to God just parts of our
lives, but to God every moment of our lives, to be mindful of God's
loving presence every moment. Mother Teresa shared with him: “In
order for me to do the things that I do for others, I have to ask
Jesus, every day, to fill my heart his love.”
St. Paul also speaks about love. If I
have faith to move mountains but do not love, then I am nothing. If
I give away everything I own, but do not have love, I gain nothing.
If I preach with an eloquent tongue but do not love, I am like a
clashing cymbal. Certainly these things are also important to us to
do. But if we don't do so with love of Christ in our hearts, it
would be worthless.
The Evil One, when tempting Jesus in
the desert, says to the Lord: “If you are the Son of God, turn
these stones into bread.” Because he has no love in his heart, he
cannot even say the word love. Contrast him the Heavenly Father, the
voice from heaven that says: “This is my beloved son, in whom I am
well pleased. Listen to him.”
St. John writes: “If anyone says: I
love God, but hates his brother, he is a liar, for whoever does not
love a brother whom he has seen cannot love God, whom he has not
seen. This is the commandment we have from him: “whoever loves God
must also love his brother.”
Inspired by Mother Teresa, let us ask
Jesus to fill our hearts with his love.
