Called to Serve

I went to see the movie Spider-Man, far from home, and my impression was that the movie was very good. I'm not sure if you saw if saw the movie yet, so I don't want to spoil it for you. One thing I remembered is that Spider-Man was torn, because on the one hand, he just wanted to live a normal, ordinary life. He wanted to go to school, go on vacation with his friends, and tell the girl that he likes how he felt about her. But he's also a super-hero, and people need him to save the world from these creatures called the Elementals. As I reflect upon the biblical passages today, about Jesus calling the twelve disciples. I think it would be similar, because they probably wanted to live a normal, ordinary and private life, to be with their family, to go fishing, and other activities. But the Lord was calling them to do something very special, to proclaim the Kingdom of God. “The Kingdom of God is at hand.” They were called to be agents of hope, healing and mercy. The story of Joseph of Egypt is probably similar, and Joseph probably wanted to live a normal, ordinary and private life, but God called him to do something very special. God called him to take care of the people in times of famine. He not only helped the people of Egypt, but he also helped his own family. When the Lord calls us, we are not on our own, but he gives us the Holy Spirit to help us proclaim the kingdom of God. We may not be perfect, and we will probably make mistakes a long the way. But at least we are giving our best to God, and that is all God asks of us. It's like the saying: “God doesn't call the equipped, but God equips the call.”
