In the diary of St Faustina (patroness of Divine Mercy), she shares a helpful insight in paragraph 105.

The story is told that Faustina had some internal turmoil that was quite difficult to overcome.  She experienced darkness, and perhaps temptations that she wrestled with constantly.  With those temptations, she felt that she should not be receiving Holy Communion.  She felt unworthy to be a vessel for the Body and Blood of Christ.

As Faustina was pondering whether or not she should be omitting Holy Communion, she decided to consult with her Mother Superior.

Mother Superior gave her some good advice, and did not allow her to omit receiving Holy Communion.  In obedience to her, Faustina decided to continue receiving Holy Communion.

After some reflection, Faustina understood that it was obedience that saved her.  Obedience was a very important element of salvation.

Sometimes we may convince ourselves that we are always on the right path and that every decision we make is completely right.  However, there are times when we need to be open to counsel from our elders and wise persons, and benefit from their wealth of knowledge and expertise.

Obedience to the teachings of the Church also keeps us on the right path, especially when we find ourselves overwhelmed with doubt and uncertainty about some aspects of our life.

Even when I don't feel worthy to receive Christ.  Even when I question about God's existence.  Even when I am struggling in certain areas of my personal life.  Despite these things, I still need to practice obedience.

"...it was obedience that saved me."  St Faustina
