On the journey of faith, conscious that we have been created out of love, and knowing full well that we are unworthy of God's love most especially when we sin and go astray. But somehow, deep down, there is the tug in the heart saying that we belong to almighty God. That is why there is hope for the sinner because the orientation to God in no way feel condemned as one may be accustomed to. But rather as Christ conveys, an overwhelming experience as being fully embraced by the Almighty with an abiding, overwhelming and unconditional love. So much that there is no rhyme or reason, and it is baffling to the prodigal son, who deserves to be demoted to the status of the servant. And even more so, it is baffling to the elder brother so much that he refuses any part of this welcoming home celebration for his own younger brother.
Even in the midst of life's cruelty, the cross is the ultimate paradox, never being fully exhausted of meaning while we are on search for answers to some of the most deep and difficult questions.
It was the prophet Simeon who said to the Blessed Mother on the feast of presentation: this child of yours will be a sign of contradiction, and you yourself a sword shall pierce.
As we stand at the foot of the cross, being unworthy of his love, and yet our eyes are not fixed upon its unworthy self but upon the extended arms of Christ on the cross. Isn't it a blessing that his arms are extended wide enough to reach out to even those who may feel as if they are beyond God's reach.
The soul's maturity is when it becomes conscious of being unworthy and undeserving of God's love, but yet being enveloped into the extended arms of Jesus Christ, the redeemer. It becomes that God is good, and his sacrificial actions are life giving. It is because by your holy cross, Lord Jesus, that you have redeemed the world.
