Many blessings and graces to you on the eve of the new calendar year. Last Sunday, the second reading says to give thanks always. So, thank you for being faithful servants of Christ in the last year. I wish you all the best in 2014.
Its always exciting to start off a new calendar year. Because it's a new beginning. Its like beginning a new adventure. The old is passed and the new is here. We have the opportunity anew and afresh.
The beginning of something new is always an exciting time. Something that we look forward to and long for. The Gospel of St John tells us "in the beginning." The Word was present at the beginning. But also a new beginning of grace and redemption. Christ is the Word that was made flesh and dwelt among us.
The "Word" in Ancient Greek means Logos or the Word of God. The Hebrews would see the Word of God as God himself. The Greeks would've considered logos as the element that brings about order in the world. So what John is doing is telling both Hebrews and Greeks about the Logos. The Logos is not just a concept or an idea. But it is a person. It is Jesus the Christ. Christ was present at beginning, existing before all time with the Heavenly Father.
Interestingly, the Four gospels all begin differently. Matthew says that Christ is from Abraham. Mark says that Christ is from Nazareth. Luke says that Christ is from Adam, so he is the new Adam. John begins by saying that Christ is from heaven. He is the Logos that existed before time. The Logos is made flesh and dwelt among us. The Logos is Jesus the Christ.
"Darkness has not overcome it." Darkness cannot be effective over the light. It is with great hope to hear this particular verse. The light will eventually win.
May you be blessed in the new calendar year. May it be an exciting journey filled with hope and peace of Christ. Amen.
