Jesus Wept

There are three instances in which the Gospel tells us that Christ wept.  The first is at the tomb of Lazarus.  The second instance is at the Garden of Gethsamane.  The third is on Palm Sunday when he overlook the city of Jerusalem.

The weeping over Jerusalem was a different kind of weeping.  The Greek word used is klaio.  It describes a type of weeping that is loud and audible.  In other instances, it was silent weeping.  In these instances, Christ showed his true humanity and his tender heart.

It is said that some old copies of the Bible omitted the passage of his weeping.  Some believe that if Christ was perfect, he would not be weeping.  But Christ did not want to hide it.  In addition, judgement from God doesn't always result in glee.  Rather, this shows the compassionate God who wept although the judgement is right and just.

It would be better not explain away this delicate moment, but to stand with Christ and see and hear him weep copiously for his beloved people.  It is a cry of helplessness, but also a trust and complete reliance in God the Father.
