Pope Benedict XVI

Dear Brethren,

On Monday, we receive word that our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI is retiring from the papacy beginning February 28 because of his advanced age.  I was shocked and saddened by the news, and I'm sure many Catholics are wondering about the implications.  But I think that the Holy Father is teaching us about the gift of humility.  The Church is need of strong leadership during this time, especially in the constant changing moral climate.  The Holy Father is retiring so that someone else can fulfill the spiritual need throughout the world.  He stated that he will devote the rest of his life entirely to prayer.  It's good for us to continue and pray daily for the Holy Father.  Perhaps each of us can pray at least an Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be, for Pope Benedict XVI and for his intentions if we haven't already done so.  Also, we need to pray for a smooth transition as the College of Cardinals prayerfully discern and elect the next person for the Petrine Office.  Peace of Christ!
