Just because the majority of people or even Catholics use birth control
doesn't mean it is morally right. The Bishops need to speak out because they
are suppose to be the Shepherds of their flock and have the Authority on
matters of morality. But many people don't listen, possibly because of celibacy. That
is why Lay Leaders are needed to take ownership of the Church's natural moral
teachings, not give into discouragement, but put those teachings into practice.
The Holy Father, Pope Paul VI is trying to warn the people
of the temptation towards embracing a contraceptive mentality. This kind of
mentality allows for "writing off" people just because they are or
can become an inconvenience, embarrassment, or even a burden. For instance, a
child is inconvenient, so let's just get rid of it. Better yet, why not just
take a pill to guarantee our happy lifestyle. We certainly will have a better
life, no paying for child care, no education expenses, we can go to the movies
or out to dinner whenever we want. It's great not to have baggage.
Let's take it further and apply the contraceptive mentality for the elderly. They are expensive and can burden our lifestyle. Why not just give them a pill that could end it all so that we could maintain the wonderful life that we are currently having?
That way of thinking allows for the disposal of people so that an individual or groups of people can maintain or achieve an ideal lifestyle. God bless.
